LISBON — An evaluation for competency to stand trial was being issued for Ryan Thompson, 40, listed as homeless and charged with felony assault for a May 27 incident in Salem when he kicked a police officer.

Thompson appeared before Judge Scott Washam in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday. His attorney asked for leave to file a motion for a competency evaluation, which the judge granted.

During the hearing, the defendant reportedly made statements not entirely clear or logical and became agitated.

The evaluation will be done by the Forensic Psychiatric Center of Northeast Ohio. A status hearing was tentatively set for Nov. 3.

Besides the fourth-degree felony assault charge, other charges against Thompson include misdemeanors of disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. Thompson allegedly attempted to gain access to the Call Sign Alpha gun store in Salem, showed signs of impairment and tried to walk away from officers.
